A little red hen lived on a farm with a lazy pig, a lazy cat, and a lazy rat.One sunny day, she found a small seed of wheat in the yard.“Who will help me plant this wheat?” she asked her three neighbors.
“Not I,” said the pig. “Not I,” said the cat. “Not I,” said the rat.“Then I will plant it myself,” said the little red hen, and she did.All summer long, the wheat grew taller and taller under the warm sun.
When the wheat turned golden, the little red hen asked, “Who will help me cut it?”“Not I,” said the pig. “Not I,” said the cat. “Not I,” said the rat.“Then I will cut it myself,” said the little red hen, and she did.
Next, she carried the wheat to the mill, where the miller ground it into soft white flour.“Who will help me bake this flour into bread?” the little red hen asked.“Not I,” said the pig. “Not I,” said the cat. “Not I,” said the rat.
“Then I will bake it myself,” said the little red hen, and she did.Soon a warm, sweet smell filled the whole farmyard, and the pig, the cat, and the rat came running.“Who will help me eat this bread?” asked the little red hen. “I will!” said the pig. “I will!” said the cat. “I will!” said the rat.
“No, you will not,” said the little red hen. “You did not help me plant it, cut it, or bake it.”“So my chicks and I will eat it ourselves” — and they did, down to the very last crumb.

Source: Adapted from Florence White Williams's The Little Red Hen (1918; Project Gutenberg #18735, an old English/American nursery tale, long in the public domain) — the next English/American nursery tale after Henny-Penny and The Three Little Pigs. Genuinely gentle throughout: no villain, no peril, just a hardworking hen and her lazy neighbors. This simplified retelling and its Korean translation are original text written for SeoJae Story.
