Snow-White and Rose-Red were two sisters who lived with their mother in a small cottage. Two rose trees grew by their door, one with white flowers and one with red.The sisters loved each other so much that they always held hands when they walked together.

Wild animals never harmed the girls, and a little hare, a deer, and birds all came close to them without fear. One winter evening, someone knocked at the door, and it turned out to be a big black bear looking for warmth.Their mother welcomed him in, and soon the girls were playing happily with the gentle bear by the fire.

All winter long, the bear came back every evening to warm himself and play with the children. When spring arrived, the bear said he had to leave to guard his treasure from the wicked dwarfs living underground. As he hurried out the door, a piece of his fur coat caught on the latch, and Snow-White thought she saw gold shining beneath it.

Soon after, the sisters found a dwarf in the forest with his long white beard caught in a split tree trunk.Instead of thanking them, the dwarf grabbed his sack of gold and stomped away without a word. The sisters helped the same ungrateful dwarf two more times — once when his beard was tangled in a fishing line, and once when a great eagle tried to carry him away.

Each time, the dwarf only complained about his torn coat or beard and hurried off with another bag of treasure. One evening, the sisters found the dwarf admiring a pile of glittering jewels when the bear suddenly appeared.Terrified, the dwarf begged the bear to eat the sisters instead of him, but the bear only chased the ungrateful dwarf away, and he was never seen near their home again.

As the dwarf ran off, the bear’s coat suddenly fell away, and a handsome prince stood before the astonished sisters. He explained that the dwarf’s magic had turned him into a bear, and now that the spell was broken, Snow-White married the prince and Rose-Red married his brother, and their mother kept the two rose trees blooming outside her window for the rest of her life.
