Mr. Jabez Wilson, a pawnbroker with a truly remarkable head of flaming red hair, came to see my friend Sherlock Holmes about the strangest experience of his life. His young assistant, Vincent Spaulding, worked for him at half the usual wages simply so that he could, as he said, learn the pawnbroking trade. One day Spaulding showed him a newspaper advertisement announcing that the Red-Headed League had an opening, offering excellent pay to any red-headed man who applied.
Wilson thought it must be some kind of joke, but Spaulding insisted so strongly that he was almost dragged down to the League’s office to apply. The office was already crowded with red-headed men of every shade, but Wilson’s especially vivid color won him the position over all the rest. His only duty was to sit in an office for four hours each day copying out the Encyclopaedia Britannica by hand, for excellent pay.
For eight weeks, Wilson faithfully copied out page after page, while Spaulding kindly minded the pawnshop during those same hours each day. Then one morning Wilson arrived to find the office locked, with a small sign reading simply: ‘THE RED-HEADED LEAGUE IS DISSOLVED.’No one at the building’s rental office had ever heard of any Red-Headed League, and Wilson, thoroughly confused, came straight to Sherlock Holmes.
Holmes listened closely, then asked one small, seemingly odd question: how long exactly had Vincent Spaulding worked for him, and what did his knees look like?Wilson admitted, puzzled, that Spaulding’s trousers were oddly worn and dirty at the knees, as if from a great deal of kneeling.Holmes then quietly visited the pawnshop himself and, without going inside, examined the street and the buildings standing directly behind it.
He discovered that the pawnshop’s cellar backed almost directly onto the vault of a large city bank, holding a great store of French gold coins.Everything now made sense: the League had been invented purely to get Wilson safely out of his shop for four hours every single day. While Wilson copied out the encyclopedia, the man calling himself Spaulding — in truth a clever criminal named John Clay — was digging a tunnel toward the bank vault below.
That very night, Holmes, Watson, and a police officer waited quietly inside the bank vault itself, hidden in the darkness among the stacked crates of gold.Just before dawn, a section of the stone floor lifted away, and John Clay himself climbed up through the tunnel he had spent months digging.Holmes and the officer seized him at once, and the elaborate scheme of the Red-Headed League came to its quiet, satisfying end.
