Once there was a mother pig with three little pigs, and one day she told them it was time to leave home and build houses of their own.The first little pig met a man carrying straw and asked for enough of it to build a house. The man gave him the straw, and the little pig built his house in a single afternoon.

That evening, a hungry wolf knocked on the straw house door and said, “Little pig, little pig, let me come in.”“Not by the hair of my chinny chin chin!” the little pig answered.“Then I’ll huff, and I’ll puff, and I’ll blow your house in,” said the wolf, and he did.

The first little pig ran as fast as he could to his brother’s house, which was built of sticks. The wolf soon found them both and huffed and puffed until the stick house fell down too.The two little pigs ran together to their third brother’s house, which was built of bricks.

The wolf huffed, and he puffed, and he puffed, and he huffed, but the brick house would not fall down.Growing angrier by the minute, the wolf decided to climb down the chimney instead. But the clever third little pig had a big pot of water boiling on the fire, right below the chimney.

The wolf fell straight into the pot with a tremendous splash. He jumped out with a yelp, dripping wet, and ran off into the forest as fast as his legs could carry him.No one in that part of the forest ever saw the wolf again.

The three little pigs lived together happily in the strong brick house from that day on.And whenever they told the story, they always agreed: it pays to build something that lasts.

Your Summary

In 1–2 sentences, say how the third little pig's brick house and clever thinking saved all three pigs from the wolf.

Source: Adapted from "The Story of the Three Little Pigs" in Joseph Jacobs's English Fairy Tales (1890; Project Gutenberg #7439, long in the public domain). The original ending, in which the wolf eats the first two pigs and is then boiled and eaten himself, is softened here: the first two pigs escape to their brothers' houses, and the wolf is merely scalded and frightened off for good. This simplified retelling and its Korean translation are original text written for SeoJae Story.
