After dinner, the Time Traveller settled into his armchair and announced to his guests that he was about to overturn everything they thought they knew about geometry. He explained that any real object had to have four dimensions, not three — Length, Breadth, Thickness, and, he insisted, Time itself.Filby, a skeptical red-haired guest, argued that a solid object obviously existed without needing any fourth dimension — but the Time Traveller pressed him: could a cube that lasted no time at all really be called real?

Scientific people already knew, he went on, that time was simply another kind of space — and if a man could rise and fall through the dimension of height in a balloon, why shouldn’t he one day move freely along the dimension of time as well?“That is the germ of my great discovery,” he said, and revealed that he had long dreamed of building a machine that could travel through time in either direction, exactly as its driver chose. His guests only laughed at first — until he quietly left the room and returned holding a small, glittering model, no larger than a clock, made of metal, ivory, and glass.

He set it on a small table in the bright lamplight, where Filby, the Medical Man, the Psychologist, and the others could all watch it closely from every side.“This is only a model,” he told them, “but it is my plan for a machine to travel through time. This lever sends it gliding into the future; this other one reverses the motion.”He asked them to look closely at the table and the model itself, insisting he wanted no one accusing him of trickery afterward.

Then, changing his mind about pressing the lever himself, he asked the Psychologist to reach out and push it forward instead.A breath of wind stirred through the room, the lamp flame jumped, and one candle on the mantel blew out.The little machine spun, flickered like a ghost for an instant, and vanished completely — leaving the table entirely bare.

For a full minute nobody spoke; then Filby swore under his breath, and the Psychologist ducked down to check beneath the table for hidden wires.“Do you seriously believe that machine has traveled into time?” the Medical Man finally asked. “Certainly,” the Time Traveller replied, calmly lighting his pipe.He added that a full-sized version stood nearly finished in his laboratory, and that once it was ready, he meant to make the journey himself.

When the Psychologist reasoned aloud that the model must have slipped into the past, since it had not moved anywhere in space, the Time Traveller only smiled and let the argument run on.At last he picked up his lamp and asked his stunned guests a single question: would they like to see the real Time Machine for themselves?

Your Summary

In 1–2 sentences, say what happened when the Psychologist pushed the lever on the Time Traveller's model machine.

Source: Adapted from H. G. Wells's The Time Machine (1895; Project Gutenberg #35, long in the public domain) — the opening chapters, "Introduction" and "The Machine": the Time Traveller argues that time is simply a fourth dimension, then proves it by sending a small model machine vanishing into time before his stunned dinner guests' eyes. An entirely fresh author for the shelf, and the first science-fiction pick. This simplified retelling and its Korean translation are original text written for SeoJae Story.
