What nunchi means
눈치 (nunchi) is the ability to sense what other people think or feel without being told: the mood in a room, a hint, the thing nobody is saying out loud. Someone with good nunchi knows when to speak, when to leave, and when a "no, I'm fine" means the opposite.
English gets close with "reading the room", "tact" or "being perceptive", but none of them covers everything. Korean also uses 눈치 for simply noticing something, and for the nervous habit of watching how others react before you act.
Five phrases you will hear
Nunchi almost always comes with a verb. These five cover most of what you will meet in stories and dramas.
| Korean | Meaning | Natural English |
|---|---|---|
| 눈치채다 | to catch on, to notice | notice, realize, guess, suspect |
| 눈치가 빠르다 | nunchi is fast | quick, perceptive, sharp |
| 눈치가 없다 | has no nunchi | can't take a hint, clueless |
| 눈치(를) 보다 | to look at nunchi | watch how others react; worry what people think |
| 눈치껏 | as nunchi tells you | use your judgement, read the situation |
Nunchi in real stories
Every sentence in the SeoJae Story library is translated, so you can see how 눈치 behaves in context. These are real lines from our stories, with the English beside them.

One Korean word, five English ones
Look at the bold words: sensed, realized, guessed, suspect, quick. The Korean stays the same while the English changes with the scene. That is why a dictionary definition of nunchi feels thin, and why a dozen real sentences teach it better than any list.
If you want the reverse view, our Korean edition of this guide shows Korean learners of English which of those English words to pick, and when.
