Sara climbed the three long flights to her attic, aching with hunger after a hard evening of errands, only cold bread from the kitchen in her stomach. She found Ermengarde waiting for her, wrapped in a red shawl and worried about a pile of difficult books her father had sent, which she was sure she would never manage to read.Sara offered to read the books herself and retell every story so vividly that Ermengarde would remember it all — because, she said, being kind mattered more than being clever.

Just then they heard Miss Minchin’s angry voice on the stairs below, scolding Becky for supposedly stealing a meat pie that the cook had really given to her own policeman friend.Sara clenched her fists in the dark, furious that Becky was being punished for someone else’s theft, and burst into tears — the first time proud, unconquerable Sara had ever cried in front of her friend.Startled, Ermengarde gently asked whether Sara herself was ever hungry, and the truth spilled out at last: Sara admitted she was starving too.

Ermengarde suddenly remembered a hamper of cakes, pies, and fruit her aunt had sent that very afternoon, still untouched in her room.Overjoyed, the girls decided to invite Becky and hold a secret feast in the attic, pretending it was a grand banquet in a castle hall.Using only an old red shawl, some handkerchiefs from Sara’s trunk, and a few paper flowers, Sara’s imagination transformed the bare attic into something that felt, for a few minutes, almost like magic.

They had barely lifted the first pieces of cake to their mouths when heavy footsteps came pounding up the stairs — Miss Minchin, tipped off by a jealous classmate, had discovered them.Furious, she swept the whole feast back into the hamper, sent Becky away in tears, and told Sara she would go without breakfast, dinner, and supper the next day as punishment.Left alone in the cold, dark attic, Sara hugged her doll Emily and whispered that there was no banquet left now, and no princess — only the prisoner in the attic.

Too tired and hungry to do anything else, Sara climbed into bed and murmured a last, small wish into the darkness: that the grate held a bright fire, and the bed was warm and soft.Exhausted, she fell into a deep sleep and did not stir, even when the skylight clicked softly, as if something had slipped away across the roof outside. When Sara woke, she felt so warm and comfortable that she was sure she was still dreaming — until she opened her eyes and saw a blazing fire, a steaming kettle, a table laid with hot food, and thick new blankets on her bed.

She touched everything with trembling hands, and on top of a stack of new books she found a note that read simply, “To the little girl in the attic. From a friend.”In tears of wonder, Sara ran to wake Becky, pulling her into the warm, glowing room and crying that the Magic — the same Magic that never let the worst things quite happen — had come while they slept.
