Two weeks later Dr. Jekyll gave one of his pleasant dinners for five or six old friends, and Mr. Utterson managed to stay behind after the others had gone. This was nothing unusual, for hosts liked to keep the quiet lawyer a little longer, resting in his calm silence after the noise of the party.Jekyll, a large, handsome man of fifty with a kind face, sat across the fire, and it was plain that he loved his old friend warmly.
“I have been wanting to speak to you, Jekyll,” Utterson began. “You know that will of yours?”Jekyll laughed it off and joked about Lanyon, calling him a narrow-minded pedant who disliked his scientific heresies, but Utterson went on: “I have been learning something of young Hyde.”Jekyll’s handsome face went pale to the lips. “I do not care to hear more,” he said. “This is a matter I thought we had agreed to drop.”
Utterson begged him to trust him and tell him everything, promising to help him out of any trouble.Jekyll thanked him warmly but said it was not what he imagined: “The moment I choose, I can be rid of Mr. Hyde. I give you my hand upon that.”“This is a private matter,” he added, “and I beg of you to let it sleep.”
Then he made one last request: he had a very great interest in poor Hyde, and if he were ever taken away, he wanted Utterson to promise to stand by the young man and get him his rights.“I can’t pretend that I shall ever like him,” said the lawyer, and Jekyll answered, “I don’t ask that. I only ask for justice.”Utterson gave a deep sigh he could not hold back. “Well,” he said, “I promise.”
