Bagehot’s book was written just seven years after a great London bank collapsed and caused a panic. In the panic that followed, more than two hundred companies failed.
“There is no country in which the cash reserve is so small, compared with the bank deposits, as it is now in England. The cash is so small that a bystander almost trembles when he compares it with the immense credit that rests upon it.
Some say we have learned how to control our credit system, but we do not always manage it wisely.Ten years ago the firm of Overend, Gurney and Company stood next to the Bank of England in the City of London, and it was better known abroad than almost any English firm.Yet in six years the partners lost all their own wealth and much of the company’s money, in ways so reckless that a child would have lent better.
Most men of business think, ‘Anyhow, this system will probably last my time.’But the collection of such immense sums in one place and in so few hands is perfectly new, so we cannot appeal to experience to prove that it is safe.Money will not manage itself, and Lombard Street has a great deal of money to manage.”
Bagehot’s answer was to study the system carefully, and that is what the rest of his book does.

What this means for your money
