The morning after the ball at Netherfield, Mr. Collins decided to propose without losing a moment, for his leave from his church lasted only until Saturday. He found Mrs. Bennet, Elizabeth and Kitty together after breakfast and, very formally, asked the mother if he might have a private audience with her fair daughter Elizabeth.Mrs. Bennet answered with delight and hurried away with Kitty, even though Elizabeth begged her to stay and finally had to give up and sit down again.
Mr. Collins began by saying that her modesty only added to her perfections, and that he had come to Hertfordshire with the plan of choosing a wife.He gave three reasons for marrying: a clergyman should set an example of marriage, it would make him happier, and his noble patron, Lady Catherine de Bourgh, had told him to do it.He then explained that he had chosen a Bennet daughter because he would inherit Longbourn one day, and wished to make the loss as small as possible for the family. He ended by assuring her that her small fortune of a thousand pounds would never be mentioned after the wedding.
Elizabeth, who had barely held back her laughter, said that he was too hasty and that she thanked him for the honour, but she must decline.Mr. Collins was not discouraged, because he said it was well known that young ladies refuse the man they secretly mean to accept, sometimes two or three times.Elizabeth answered that she was not one of those young ladies who risk their happiness on the chance of being asked again, and that she was perfectly serious. She told him that she could not make him happy, and that she was the last woman in the world who would suit his noble patron.
Still he refused to hear her, and he suggested that she was only trying to increase his love by keeping him in suspense, as elegant ladies do.Elizabeth said she had no wish to torment a respectable man, and asked him to take her as a rational creature speaking the truth from her heart. He cried that she was uniformly charming, and said that her parents’ blessing would surely make her accept him.Elizabeth left the room in silence, determined to ask her father to give an answer that no one could mistake for coy playfulness.
