When Zarathustra was thirty years old, he left his home and went into the mountains. There he enjoyed his spirit and his solitude, and for ten years he did not grow tired of it.But at last his heart changed. One morning he rose with the dawn, stood before the sun and said: “Great star! What would your happiness be, if you had no one to shine for?I am tired of my wisdom, like a bee that has gathered too much honey. I need hands held out to take it. So I must go down, as you do in the evening.”
On the way down he met an old holy man living in the forest, who spent his days singing hymns to God.When Zarathustra was alone again, he said to his heart: “Could it be possible! This old saint in the forest has not yet heard that God is dead!”
In the nearest town, a crowd had gathered in the market-place to watch a rope-dancer. Zarathustra spoke to the people:“I teach you the Superman. Man is something that must be overcome. What have you done to overcome him? What is the ape to man? A joke, or a painful embarrassment. And man shall be just the same to the Superman: a joke, or a painful embarrassment. The Superman is the meaning of the earth. I beg you, my brothers, stay true to the earth, and do not believe those who speak to you of hopes beyond this world!Man is a rope stretched between the animal and the Superman: a rope over an abyss. What is great in man is that he is a bridge and not a goal.I tell you: one must still have chaos inside oneself to give birth to a dancing star.”
The people did not understand, so Zarathustra described the most contemptible thing of all, the last man.“‘What is love? What is creation? What is longing? What is a star?’ So asks the last man, and blinks. The earth has then become small, and on it hops the last man, who makes everything small. ‘We have discovered happiness,’ say the last men, and they blink.”But the crowd shouted with joy: “Give us this last man, O Zarathustra! Make us into these last men, and you can keep your Superman!”Zarathustra grew sad and said to his heart: “They do not understand me. I am not the mouth for these ears.”

In plain words
