In his second chapter, Malthus puts numbers to his idea.
“In the United States of America, where food is plentiful and people marry young, the population has been found to double itself in twenty-five years. Now take this island of Britain. With the best possible policy, its food might be doubled in the first twenty-five years, but in the next twenty-five it cannot be doubled again. The most we can imagine is that each period adds as much food as the island produces now.
Britain has about seven million people.After a century, there would be one hundred and twelve million people, and food for only thirty-five million.For the whole world, population would grow as 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, 256, while food grew as 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9.
When people increase faster than food, the poor must live much worse. There are too many workers, so wages fall while the price of food rises. Then people marry later and have fewer children, until food catches up, and the whole cycle begins again.”
Malthus called this movement up and down an ‘oscillation’.

What this means for your money
