In England, the ‘poor laws’ collected money in every parish to help the poor, yet poverty never seemed to go away.Malthus explained why with a famous example.
“People are astonished that nearly three million pounds are collected for the poor every year, and still their distress is not removed. Some think the money must be stolen, and others that the officials spend it on dinners. But suppose the rich gave enough money to raise every worker’s pay from eighteen pence a day to five shillings.
You might imagine that they could then eat meat every day for dinner. But this would be a false conclusion, because the gift would not increase the quantity of meat in the country.Buyers would compete in the market, and the price of meat would rise from sixpence a pound to two or three shillings.
When something is scarce, the person who offers the most money gets it.If I only give a poor man money, while the country produces the same amount, I give him a larger share of the food, which he cannot receive without making the shares of others smaller.”
In other words, printing money or handing it out cannot by itself create more bread or more meat.

What this means for your money
