If the value of land is created by the whole community, George asked, why should it go only to the people who own the land? His famous answer was short.
“We must make land common property. But I do not propose to buy or to take away anyone’s land; let the owners keep it, and buy and sell it, and call it theirs. We may safely leave them the shell, if we take the kernel. It is not necessary to take the land; it is only necessary to take the rent.
So I propose to abolish all taxation except that upon land values. The value of land is nothing at the start of a society, but it grows greater and greater as the population increases. In every civilised country, the value of the land is enough to pay all the costs of government.”
Workers would keep all of their wages, businesses all of their profits, and only the land would be taxed. This idea became known as the ‘single tax’, and it made Henry George one of the most famous men in the world.

What this means for your money
