Rockefeller gave away more than five hundred million dollars in his lifetime, founding a university, a medical institute and a great foundation. He called his chapter on charity ‘The Difficult Art of Giving’.
“I am sure it is a mistake to think that great wealth necessarily brings happiness. The very rich are just like the rest of us, and the novelty of being able to buy anything soon passes, because what people most want cannot be bought with money.A rich man cannot buy a good digestion, and he cannot spend much on fine clothes without being laughed at.The only way he can get real value for his money is to learn to enjoy giving where it will do lasting good.
The best philanthropy is not what is usually called charity. It is the investment of effort, time or money to create jobs at fair wages and give people opportunity where there was none before. The man who plans to do all his giving on Sunday is a poor support for his country.
If I were to give advice to a young man starting out in life, I should say: do not begin by trying to get all you can from the world.Ask first, ‘Where can I fit in so that I may be most effective in the work of the world?’”

What this means for your money
