Reminiscences of a Stock Operator (1923) tells the life of a famous trader, thinly disguised under the name Larry Livingston.Everyone knew he was really Jesse Livermore, who made and lost several fortunes on Wall Street.

“I went to work when I was just out of school, as a boy who wrote the share prices on a big board in a broker’s office. To me those prices were not dollars; they were numbers, and they were always changing.I noticed that prices had habits, so to speak, and by fourteen I was guessing where they would go next.

Another lesson I learned early is that there is nothing new in Wall Street. There can’t be, because speculation is as old as the hills.Whatever happens in the stock market today has happened before and will happen again.

I kept a little notebook of my guesses, not to dream of millions, but to check whether I had been right. When an older office boy gave me a tip on a stock, I checked my notebook first, and it pointed the same way.We put in our money together, and two days later I had made a profit of $3.12.”

By fifteen he had made his first thousand dollars, and the boy who loved numbers became one of the most famous traders in history.

What this means for your money
