In the middle of the essay, Emerson names two things that stop us from trusting ourselves: the pressure to fit in, and the fear of contradicting what we said before.

“Society everywhere is in a plot against the independence of every one of its members. The virtue it wants most is conformity; self-reliance is what it dislikes.Whoever would be a man must be a nonconformist.Nothing is at last sacred but the honesty of your own mind.

What I must do is all that concerns me, not what the people think. This is hard, because you will always find people who think they know your duty better than you do.It is easy in the world to live by the world’s opinion; it is easy alone to live by our own.But the great man is he who, in the middle of the crowd, keeps with perfect sweetness the independence of solitude.

The other fear that keeps us from trusting ourselves is our consistency: we respect our past words and acts because others judge us by them.A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds.Speak what you think now in hard words, and tomorrow speak what tomorrow thinks in hard words again, though it contradicts everything you said today.‘Ah, then you will surely be misunderstood.’ Is it so bad, then, to be misunderstood?Pythagoras was misunderstood, and Socrates, and Jesus, and Luther, and Copernicus, and Galileo, and Newton. To be great is to be misunderstood.”

In plain words
