John Stuart Mill was an English philosopher and economist who started learning Greek at the age of three. In 1859 he published On Liberty, a short book about how much power a society should have over each person.

“In the past, people feared the power of kings. Now people choose their own rulers, and some think that the people need no protection from their own power. But ‘the people’ who rule are not always the same as the people who are ruled; in practice, it means the majority. So we must also guard against the tyranny of the majority. This tyranny does not only work through laws; society can also force its opinions and customs on those who disagree, and this reaches deeper into life than many laws, and leaves fewer ways to escape.

The aim of this essay is to state one very simple principle. The only purpose for which power can rightly be used over any member of a civilised community, against his will, is to prevent harm to others. His own good, of body or of mind, is not a good enough reason. You may argue with him, reason with him or beg him, but you may not force him, just because it would make him happier or because others think it wise.

The only part of a person’s conduct for which he must answer to society is the part that concerns others. In the part that concerns only himself, his independence is absolute.Over himself, over his own body and mind, the individual is sovereign.”Mill adds that this applies only to adults, not to children, who still need others to protect them.

In plain words
