Adler’s most important idea is what he called the social feeling, often called ‘community feeling’ today: the sense that we belong to a community and care about our fellow human beings. For Adler, this feeling, and not intelligence or success, was the true measure of a person.
“Next to the striving for power, the social feeling plays the most important role in the development of character. It appears in a child’s very first wishes, especially in its desire for closeness and tenderness. We must not make life too bitter for a child, and we must let it experience the joy of living. The degree to which a person’s social feeling has developed is the only standard of human value that holds everywhere. No one can completely break away from it; it is always there, reminding us with its warning voice of what we owe to others.
But the appearance of social feeling can be misused, as this story shows. An old woman slipped while getting on a streetcar and fell in the snow, and many people hurried past without helping her.At last a man stepped up and lifted her to her feet.At that moment another man jumped out from where he had been hiding and said: ‘Thank God! At last I have found a decent man. I have been standing here for five minutes, waiting to see if anyone would help her. You are the first!’With this trick, he made himself a judge of others, handing out praise and blame, without lifting a finger to help.
When it is hard to judge, the standard we need is usefulness to society and the well-being of all humanity: the common good.”

In plain words
