In the chapter ‘Where I Lived, and What I Lived For’, Thoreau explains why he went to the woods at all.

“I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to face only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach.I did not want to find, when I came to die, that I had not lived.I did not wish to live what was not life, for living is so precious.I wanted to live deep and suck out all the marrow of life.

Still we live meanly, like ants; our life is wasted away by detail. An honest man hardly needs to count beyond his ten fingers, or in extreme cases he may add his ten toes.Simplicity, simplicity, simplicity! I say, let your affairs be as two or three, and not a hundred or a thousand.Simplify, simplify. Instead of three meals a day, if necessary eat only one; instead of a hundred dishes, five.

Why should we live with such hurry and waste of life? We are determined to be starved before we are hungry.Time is but the stream I go fishing in; I drink at it, but while I drink I see the sandy bottom and notice how shallow it is.”

In plain words
