On 4 July 1845, the American writer Henry David Thoreau moved into a small wooden house he had built himself beside Walden Pond, near Concord, Massachusetts. He lived there alone for two years and two months, and later wrote Walden about the experiment.

“When I wrote most of these pages, I lived alone in the woods, a mile from any neighbour, in a house I had built myself, and earned my living by the work of my hands only.People in town asked me what I ate, whether I felt lonely, and whether I was afraid, so this book tries to answer them. The mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation.Even in their games and amusements there is a hidden despair, for they play only after they have finished working.

People seem to think there is no other way to live, but it is never too late to give up our prejudices. No way of thinking or doing, however old, can be trusted without proof. What everybody repeats or quietly accepts as true today may turn out to be false tomorrow.

The cost of a thing is the amount of life you must give in exchange for it, now or later. An ordinary house in this town costs about eight hundred dollars, and saving that much takes a worker ten to fifteen years of his life.My own house cost me twenty-eight dollars and twelve and a half cents, and I built it with my own hands.”

In plain words
