The jury found Socrates guilty, and his accuser asked for the death penalty.By Athenian law, Socrates could now suggest a different penalty, and the jury would choose between the two.
“What do I deserve? A poor man who has spent his life trying to make you better deserves free meals at the city’s expense, like a winner at the Olympic Games. The Olympic winner only makes you seem happy; I make you really happy.Someone will say, ‘Socrates, can’t you just keep quiet and go and live in another city?’But I cannot, because to talk every day about goodness and to examine myself and others is the greatest good for a person, and the unexamined life is not worth living.I know you will believe this even less, but it is the truth.”
In the end, his friends, including Plato, offered to pay a fine for him, but the jury chose death.“The difficulty, my friends, is not to avoid death, but to avoid doing wrong, for wrongdoing runs faster than death.I am old and slow, so the slower runner, death, has caught me; my accusers are quick, so the faster runner, wrongdoing, has caught them.
There is good reason to hope that death is a good thing, for it is one of two things.Either it is like a deep sleep without even dreams, and then all of eternity is only a single night;or it is a journey to another place, where I could go on asking questions of the great men of the past, and there they do not put a man to death for asking questions. The hour of departure has come, and we go our ways, I to die, and you to live. Which is better, only the god knows.”

In plain words
