While Van Helsing travelled to Amsterdam, Seward met Mina Harker at the station and brought her to his house. She had brought her typewriter, and she had already typed out her own diary and Jonathan’s.Seward kept his own diary in a strange new machine, a phonograph, which recorded his voice on wax cylinders.

At first he did not want Mina to hear it, because it told the terrible truth about Lucy’s death. But after he read her typed pages, he trusted her and gave her the cylinders.Mina listened to the whole story, and then, pale but calm, she began to type every word of it.

“We must put every letter and diary in order by date,” she said, “because in this matter, dates are everything.”Jonathan arrived the next morning, full of energy, and he set off to trace the Count’s fifty boxes of earth. He learned that every box from Whitby had been carried to the old chapel at Carfax, the empty house right next door to Seward’s asylum.

That afternoon Arthur and Quincey arrived, and Mina had to meet them alone. When she told Arthur that she wanted to be like a sister to him, for Lucy’s sake, he broke down and cried like a child. For days he had kept his grief inside, with no one to share it.

Later, Quincey saw her red eyes and thanked her for comforting his friend.Mina kissed him kindly on the cheek, and he called her “little girl,” just as he used to call Lucy. Now, for the first time, everyone who had loved Lucy was together, and they all knew the whole story.
