Spring came quickly; the skies were clear, and the dark, empty land was now covered with beautiful flowers. One day, while the old man played his guitar, I noticed that Felix looked sadder than ever and sighed again and again. Then someone knocked at the door: it was a lady on horseback, dressed in dark clothes and covered by a thick black veil.

She spoke only one word, in a sweet, strange accent — “Felix” — and when he ran to her, she lifted her veil, and I saw a face of angelic beauty. At once every trace of sorrow vanished from Felix’s face; his eyes shone with joy, and he kissed her hand and called her his sweet Arabian. Her name was Safie, and although she had a language of her own, she could not understand the family, nor could they understand her.

Soon I realized that Safie was trying to learn their language, and I decided to use the same lessons to learn it too.The next morning she took the old man’s guitar and sang like a nightingale in the woods, so beautifully that tears of both sorrow and delight came to my eyes.We both learned quickly, but I learned faster than she did, and in two months I understood most of the words the family spoke.

Felix also taught Safie to read from a history book, and as I listened, I learned about the great empires of the world, their wars and their fall. How could human beings be so powerful and noble, and yet so cruel and wicked?I heard about rich and poor, about noble families and money, and I learned that a person with neither was often treated as nothing.

Then I turned to myself: I had no money, no friends and no family, and my body was huge and horribly ugly.I was stronger than any man and could live on rougher food and bear greater cold, but I had never seen or heard of anyone like me.Was I, then, a monster, from whom all people ran away?

Knowledge only increased my sorrow; sometimes I wished I had stayed in the forest, knowing nothing but hunger, thirst and cold.I learned how fathers love their children’s smiles and how mothers care for their babies, but no father had ever watched over me, and no mother had ever smiled at me.Again and again I asked myself, “What am I?” — and the only answer was a groan.
