In London I visited the scientists I needed and began to collect the materials for my new creation.Clerval spent his days meeting clever people and learning about India, because he dreamed of travelling there one day. Each time I looked at my friend’s happy face, I felt more alone, as if an invisible wall stood between us.

After some months, a friend in Scotland invited us to visit, and we travelled north through Oxford and the lakes. In Oxford I remembered the brave men of history who had lived there, and for a moment my spirits rose. But soon I remembered my promise, and I sank again into misery, like a tree struck by lightning.

I was also afraid, because I knew the monster was following me, and I feared he might hurt Clerval or my family while I was away. When we reached Scotland, I told Clerval that I wished to travel alone for a while.“Come back soon,” he said sadly. “I will miss you, and my happiness is not complete without you.”

I chose one of the most remote of the Orkney islands, a rock in the sea where the waves always beat against the shore.Only five people lived there, in poor huts, and they barely noticed the stranger who came to live among them.I rented a small hut with two rooms, repaired the roof and the door, and began my work.

In the mornings I worked, and in the evenings I walked on the stony beach and listened to the roar of the sea. This time my eyes were open, and I understood clearly what I was doing; my heart often grew sick at the work of my hands.Sometimes I could not bring myself to enter my workroom for several days.

On other days I worked day and night, trying to finish quickly so that I could be free.Every time I raised my eyes, I expected to see the monster, the being I feared most in the world.I lived in fear, waiting, and my work drew closer and closer to its end.
