It was a grey winter day, and instead of snow, a half-frozen rain kept drizzling down. For Kim Cheomji, who pulled a rickshaw inside the East Small Gate of Seoul, it was the first lucky day in a long while. He had not seen a single coin in ten days, but since morning two passengers in a row had come his way, and he now held eighty jeon, a lot of money for him.

At home lay his wife, who had been sick in bed for more than a month. She coughed and coughed and could hardly swallow a spoonful of millet, yet she had never had a single dose of medicine. For the last three days, she had been begging her husband for some ox-bone soup. This morning, too, she had tried to hold him back in a shaking voice: "Don't go out today. I'm so sick..." Kim had shouted, "Don't bring me bad luck with that talk!" and walked out the door.

His luck did not stop there. A student who wanted to go to Namdaemun Station agreed without a word to the one won fifty jeon that Kim asked for. His rain-soaked body felt light enough to fly, yet strangely, his legs grew heavy as he passed near home. "Don't go out today." His wife's words kept ringing in his ears. Yet the louder they rang, the longer he put off going home, hoping his luck would last just a little longer.

Toward sunset, Kim met his friend Chisam outside a tavern. After gulping down cup after cup of rice wine on an empty stomach, Kim suddenly roared with laughter, and then just as suddenly began to sob. "My wife is dead." When Chisam stared in shock, Kim laughed again and waved his hand, saying it was a lie. Then, staggering, he bought a bowl of ox-bone soup and set off for home.

The house was as silent as a grave. He could not hear the usual coughing, or the short, hard breathing. The only sound was the baby sucking at an empty breast. Kim shouted even louder on purpose and kicked at his wife's legs where she lay, but all his foot met was something like a block of wood.

Kim pressed his face against his wife's face and wailed. "I brought you the soup, so why won't you eat it, why won't you eat it... Strange, my luck was so good today..."
