At twelve years old, I was made an apprentice to my brother James, who was a printer, and I lived and worked in his print shop for the next several years.I loved reading, but I owned very few books, so I borrowed and read anything I could find, often staying up half the night to finish a book I had to return by morning.I wanted very much to write well, and I noticed that my own writing was clumsy next to the essays in a magazine I admired, so I set myself a private exercise.
I would read one of the magazine’s essays closely, then put it away, wait a few days, and try to write it out again from memory, in my own words.Afterward I compared my version with the original, corrected my faults, and sometimes even turned the essay into verse and back into prose again, just to master new words and better sentences.By this quiet, patient method, carried on almost every night for over a year, I taught myself to write far better than any school could have taught me.
Around this time, I began secretly writing letters to my brother’s newspaper under the name of a made-up widow, Mrs. Silence Dogood, and slipping them under the print-shop door at night. To my delight, the letters were printed, and my brother and his friends praised “Mrs. Dogood” highly, arguing over who the clever writer might really be, never once suspecting me.I kept up the secret for months, hardly able to hide my pleasure at hearing my own work praised by men who thought so little of my ordinary writing.
When I finally admitted that I was the true author, my brother was not proud of me at all — he grew jealous and began treating me more harshly than before. The harder he was on me, the more I longed to be free of my apprenticeship, until at seventeen I quietly left his shop and sailed to Philadelphia to start again with almost nothing in my pockets. In that new city I built a printing business, a newspaper, and eventually a public library, and spent the rest of my long life writing, inventing, and helping to found a new nation.
