옛날에 한 할머니가 밭에서 팥을 키웠어요.어느 날 커다란 호랑이가 나타났어요. “할멈, 잡아먹어야겠다!”할머니가 말했어요. “동짓날에 팥죽을 다 먹고 나서 잡아먹으렴.”

자라, 송곳, 맷돌, 멍석, 지게도 하나씩 와서 똑같이 말했어요.모두 팥죽을 한 그릇씩 먹고 집 안 여기저기에 숨었어요.밤이 되자 호랑이가 왔어요. “할멈, 이제 잡아먹으러 왔다!”
호랑이가 아궁이 앞에 앉자, 알밤이 톡 튀어서 호랑이 눈을 때렸어요.호랑이가 물독에서 눈을 씻으려고 하자, 자라가 호랑이 코를 꽉 물었어요.호랑이가 도망가려고 하자, 송곳이 엉덩이를 콕 찔렀어요.
그때 맷돌이 위에서 쿵 떨어져서 호랑이가 쓰러졌어요.멍석이 호랑이를 둘둘 말았고, 지게가 멍석을 지고 강으로 갔어요.지게는 호랑이를 강물에 풍덩 던졌고, 할머니는 그 뒤로 오래오래 행복하게 살았어요.

Long ago, an old woman grew red beans in her field. One day a huge tiger appeared. "Old woman, I'm going to eat you!" The old woman said, "Wait until I've eaten my red-bean porridge on the winter solstice, and then eat me."
On the winter solstice, the old woman cooked her red-bean porridge, crying and crying. A chestnut came rolling in and asked, "Granny, why are you crying?" When it heard the story, the chestnut said, "Give me a bowl of porridge, and I'll help you."
A turtle, an awl, a millstone, a straw mat and an A-frame carrier came one by one and said the same thing. Each of them ate a bowl of porridge and hid somewhere around the house. When night came, the tiger arrived. "Old woman, I've come to eat you now!"
When the tiger sat down by the fireplace, the chestnut popped out and hit the tiger in the eye. When the tiger tried to wash its eye at the water jar, the turtle bit its nose hard. When the tiger tried to run away, the awl jabbed it in the bottom.
Just then, the millstone dropped down with a thud, and the tiger fell over. The straw mat rolled the tiger up, and the carrier took the mat on its back and went to the river. The carrier threw the tiger into the river with a splash, and the old woman lived happily ever after.
