Long ago, in a certain town, there lived a man named Squire Bae, who had two devoted daughters, Janghwa and Hongryeon. The two sisters' own mother had passed away early, and their father raised them alone, cherishing them deeply. As time passed, their father took a woman named Heo as his new wife, and she soon gave birth to two sons.
Heo began to resent the two sisters simply because they were not her own children. As the elder sister Janghwa grew beautiful and clever and received much of her father's love, Heo's jealousy deepened by the day. Wanting all the family's wealth to pass to her own sons, Heo secretly began plotting a cruel scheme to drive Janghwa away.
Heo secretly hid something inside Janghwa's bedding, then falsely told the father it proved Janghwa had done something deeply shameful. The trusting father believed the stepmother's lie completely, and the wrongly accused Janghwa had no way to prove her innocence. Heo sent Janghwa out on a night journey, claiming she must visit relatives, and Hongryeon, worried for her sister, followed close behind.
After that night, the two sisters vanished near a deep pond by the village and never returned home again. After that, every new magistrate who came to the town would meet the sisters' sorrowful spirits at midnight and die of fright. People came to fear the town as cursed, and for a long time no one dared to take the magistrate's post.
At last a fearless man named Jeong Dong-u became the new magistrate, and unafraid, he listened all the way through to what the sisters' spirits had to say. The sisters poured out their unjust story in full, and Jeong Dong-u immediately reopened the case, uncovering every detail of stepmother Heo's cruel scheme. When the truth came out, their father wept with belated remorse, and the sisters were reborn as twin daughters in another family, living happily ever after.
