When Pierre and I first believed that a new, unknown substance must exist inside the pitchblende ore, we had no proper laboratory to search for it, only an old wooden shed across the yard. The shed had once been used for cutting up bodies at the medical school, and it had a broken floor, a leaking glass roof, and no equipment except a few old kitchen tables. It was unbearably hot in summer and bitterly cold in winter, yet Pierre often said it was in that poor shed that we spent the best and happiest years of our whole lives.

For four years we worked there together, boiling down tons of the heavy brown ore, one small basinful at a time, to separate out whatever tiny, invisible thing was making it glow with energy.I stirred the boiling mixture with an iron rod nearly as tall as myself, sometimes for a whole day without stopping, in an atmosphere thick with irritating dust and fumes.Little by little, from many tons of ore, we obtained only a fraction of a gram of the pure new substance, which we decided to call radium.

Some evenings, after dinner, we would walk back to the shed together simply to look at our discovery in the dark.We had left our tiny, precious samples on shelves and tables around the room, and each one shone with its own faint, steady light. The glowing bottles and capsules looked like faint fairy lights hanging in the darkness of the humble shed, and the sight never lost its magic for us.

Pierre would hold his hand close to one of the glass tubes and remark quietly on its warmth, for radium gives off heat as well as light, without ever growing cold or being used up.It was in this simple, joyful way, not in some grand and famous laboratory, that we came to understand the strange, invisible power hidden inside ordinary rock.We never once thought to patent our discovery or keep it for ourselves; we published our methods freely, believing that this new science belonged to everyone.

Pierre always said that a scientist should not think of practical results, but only of nature itself, and of the quiet joy of understanding one more of her secrets.Years after that first glow in the shed, our work would go on to change medicine, science, and our understanding of the very atom itself.
