Long ago, deep in the mountains, there lived a poor woodcutter who lived alone, caring for his old mother. One day, while he was cutting wood, a deer came running up to him out of breath, begging to be saved. The woodcutter quickly hid the deer behind a pile of firewood, and the hunters who came chasing after it went away without finding it.

Grateful for having his life saved, the deer told the woodcutter a special secret in return. On the night of the full moon, heavenly fairies secretly came down to bathe in a pond deep in the mountains. The deer said that if he hid one fairy's robe, she would not be able to fly back to heaven and would have to remain on earth.

But the deer warned him firmly never to give the robe back until she had given birth to four children. On the night of the full moon, the woodcutter hid by the pond and secretly took the robe of the youngest fairy after the bathing was done. The other fairies flew back up to heaven, but the youngest one, having lost her robe, was left behind all alone.

The woodcutter went to the crying fairy, explained what had happened, and warmly offered that she could stay at his house if she had nowhere else to go. The fairy was sad at first, but as the woodcutter and his mother cared for her with such devotion, she slowly opened her heart, and in time the two of them came to truly love each other and were married. Several years passed, and the two of them were blessed with three lovely children.

One day the fairy told the woodcutter that she missed the days when she could fly, and asked if she might see her old robe just once more. Loving his wife and trusting her, the woodcutter's resolve softened, and even though their fourth child had not yet been born, he finally brought out the robe and gave it to her. The moment she put the robe on, the fairy held her three children tightly in her arms and, in tears, flew high up into the sky and was gone.

As the woodcutter sat alone, sunk in sorrow, the very same deer came to find him once more, with one last piece of news. Every night, the deer said, heaven lowered a great bucket to draw water from a mountain well, and by hiding inside that bucket, the woodcutter was able to be carried up into the sky. When he reached the sky, the woodcutter was finally reunited with his wife and their three children, and from then on the whole family lived happily together.

출처: Based on 선녀와 나무꾼 (Seonnyeo-wa Namukkun), an anonymous traditional Korean folktale passed down through oral storytelling and long in the public domain. This simplified retelling and its English translation are original text written for SeoJae Story. The tale has several traditional endings — some end with the woodcutter separated from his family forever; this retelling follows the gentler, well-known version in which he is reunited with them in the sky.
