In the old mining camp of Angel’s, there once lived a man named Jim Smiley who would bet on absolutely anything — a horse race, a dog fight, even which of two birds would fly off a fence first.Smiley had a small, plain-looking frog which he had spent three months patiently teaching, and he called it Dan’l Webster. He taught the frog to jump, and jump it did; in a fair jump, that frog could get over more ground in one leap than any frog you ever saw.

Smiley was monstrous proud of his frog, and was always ready to bet any stranger forty dollars that Dan’l Webster could out-jump any frog in Calaveras County. One day a stranger came into camp, and Smiley, as always, offered to bet him on the frog, but the stranger said sadly that he didn’t have a frog of his own to enter.Smiley said that was no trouble at all — he would go and catch the stranger a frog himself, if the stranger would kindly hold Dan’l Webster for him.

So Smiley put his frog down and went off to the swamp to catch a second frog, leaving Dan’l Webster alone with the stranger for several long minutes. The stranger took that chance to quietly pry open Dan’l Webster’s mouth and pour in a good, full measure of quail-shot, filling him right up to the chin. When Smiley came back with a frog for the stranger, the two men set both frogs down together, side by side, and gave the word to jump.

The new frog hopped off smartly, but Dan’l Webster only gave a heave and a grunt, and couldn’t budge more than if he had been made of stone.Smiley was the most astonished man that ever stood on two feet; he could not for the life of him understand what had come over his frog. The stranger took the money, picked up his own frog, and started slowly away, remarking over his shoulder that he saw nothing special about Dan’l Webster after all.

Smiley stood scratching his head and staring at his frog for a long time, and at last he said, ‘I do wonder what in the nation that frog throwed off for — I wonder if there ain’t something the matter with him — he ‘pears to look mighty baggy, somehow.’He caught Dan’l Webster up by the back of the neck, lifted him, and said, ‘Why, blame my cats if he don’t weigh five pound!’He turned the frog upside down, and it opened its mouth and out came a double handful of shot. Then Smiley understood the whole trick, and he set the frog down and took out after that stranger, but he never caught him.
