Long ago, in a small village, there lived a kind-hearted old man with a large lump on his cheek. One day, while gathering firewood in the mountains, night fell suddenly, and he had to spend the night in an old mountain hut. Feeling bored, the old man hummed to himself for a while, and at last began to sing loudly.
A group of goblins, called dokkaebi, heard his singing and gathered around the hut one by one. The goblins were utterly charmed by the old man's beautiful voice and asked where such a wonderful sound could possibly come from. Just for fun, the old man answered that his fine voice came straight from the lump on his cheek.
Taking him at his word, the goblins begged him to sell them the lump. When the old man nodded, the goblins used a magical club to cleanly remove the lump and gave him a huge pile of gold and treasure in return. With his lump gone and now a wealthy man besides, the old man happily returned home the next morning.
In a neighboring village lived another old man, greedy, who also had a lump on his cheek. Hearing the story, he became convinced that he too could grow rich by visiting the very same hut.
Arriving at the hut that night, though he could barely sing at all, he blurted out an offer to sell his lump the moment the goblins appeared. Hearing his clumsy singing, the goblins realized that the first old man must have tricked them. Annoyed, the goblins declared, "Then we don't need this lump either!" and stuck the very first lump onto his other cheek.
In the end, instead of gold and treasure, he ended up with two lumps and had to trudge home empty-handed. After that, the villagers loved to tell the kind old man's story, saying that honesty brings good fortune in the end. Meanwhile, the story of the greedy neighbor who lost out through his own greed still brings both laughter and a good lesson to people today.
