Once upon a time, three bears lived together in a little house in the wood. There was a Great, Huge Bear, a Middle Bear, and a Little, Small, Wee Bear, and each one had their own pot, chair, and bed.One morning the three bears made porridge for breakfast, but it was too hot to eat, so they went for a walk in the wood while it cooled.

While they were out, a little old woman came to the house and peeped in through the window. She saw no one inside, so she opened the door and walked right in.First she tasted the porridge in the Great, Huge Bear’s pot, but it was too hot for her.

Then she tasted the porridge in the Middle Bear’s pot, but it was too cold for her. Then she tasted the porridge in the Little, Small, Wee Bear’s pot, and it was just right, so she ate it all up.Next she sat in the Great, Huge Bear’s chair, but it was too hard, and then in the Middle Bear’s chair, but it was too soft.

She sat in the Little, Small, Wee Bear’s chair, and it was just right — until the bottom of the chair broke, and down she fell.Feeling tired, she went upstairs and lay down on the Great, Huge Bear’s bed, but it was too high at the head. She lay on the Middle Bear’s bed, but it was too high at the foot, so she lay on the Little, Small, Wee Bear’s bed, and it was just right, and soon she fell fast asleep.

Before long, the three bears came home for breakfast, and the Great, Huge Bear said in his great, rough voice, “Somebody has been eating my porridge!”The Middle Bear said in his middle voice, “Somebody has been eating my porridge!” and the Little, Small, Wee Bear said in his little, small, wee voice, “Somebody has been eating my porridge, and has eaten it all up!”They found their chairs and beds all out of place too, and when the Little, Small, Wee Bear looked at his own bed, he cried, “Somebody has been sleeping in my bed, and here she is!”

His little, small, wee voice was so sharp that it woke the old woman at once, and when she saw the three bears staring down at her, she jumped up in fright. She ran straight to the open window, climbed out, and hurried away into the wood as fast as she could — and the three bears never saw her again.

Adapted from Joseph Jacobs's English Fairy Tales (1890; Project Gutenberg #7439) — "The Story of the Three Bears," a fourth pick from the same collection as Henny-Penny, The Three Little Pigs, and The Old Woman and Her Pig. Genuinely gentle already: an old woman gets a fright and runs off into the wood; the source's own vaguer, darker guesses about her fate are dropped. This simplified retelling and its Korean translation are original text written for SeoJae Story.
