옛날 어느 산골 마을에 홀로 두 아이를 키우는 가난한 어머니가 살았어요.어머니는 매일 떡을 만들어 팔러 먼 장터까지 다녀왔고, 오누이는 집에서 어머니를 기다리곤 했어요.어느 날 저녁, 산길을 걸어 집으로 돌아오던 어머니 앞에 커다란 호랑이 한 마리가 나타났어요.

호랑이는 어머니의 옷을 걸치고 오누이의 집으로 찾아가, 문을 두드리며 엄마라고 속였어요.하지만 목소리가 이상하게 굵고 거칠어서, 오누이는 무언가 잘못되었다는 것을 눈치챘어요.문틈으로 살짝 내다보니, 엄마의 손이 아니라 털이 무성한 짐승의 발이 보였어요.
깜짝 놀란 오누이는 조용히 뒷문으로 빠져나가, 마당의 우물가에 있는 높은 나무 위로 올라갔어요.호랑이는 우물물에 비친 두 아이의 모습을 보고는, 나무 위로 올라오려고 애썼어요.오빠는 다급한 마음에 그만 ‘도끼로 나무를 찍어 올라오면 된다’고 소리치고 말았고, 호랑이는 그 말대로 도끼를 찍어 가며 올라오기 시작했어요.
다급해진 오누이는 하늘을 향해 간절히 빌었어요. ‘저희를 살리시려거든 튼튼한 동아줄을, 아니라면 썩은 동아줄을 내려 주세요.’그러자 하늘에서 반짝이는 튼튼한 동아줄이 내려왔고, 오누이는 그 줄을 타고 하늘로 무사히 올라갔어요.이를 본 호랑이도 똑같이 빌었지만, 하늘에서 내려온 동아줄은 다 썩어 있었어요.
호랑이가 줄을 타고 오르던 중 동아줄이 뚝 끊어져, 호랑이는 멀리 수수밭으로 떨어지고 말았어요.사람들은 그 후로 수숫대 밑동이 붉은 것이 그날 호랑이가 흘린 흔적 때문이라고 이야기해요.하늘로 올라간 오빠는 해가 되고, 동생은 달이 되어, 지금도 하늘에서 사람들을 환하게 비추어 준답니다.

Long ago, in a mountain village, there lived a poor mother who was raising two children alone. Every day the mother walked to a faraway market to sell rice cakes, and the brother and sister waited for her at home. One evening, as she walked home along the mountain path, a huge tiger appeared in front of her.
The tiger growled that it would eat her unless she gave it a rice cake, so out of fear she handed one over. But the tiger kept appearing at every turn in the path, demanding more, until not a single rice cake was left. Sadly, that night, the mother never made it back home.
The tiger put on the mother's clothes, went to the children's house, knocked on the door, and pretended to be their mother. But the voice was strangely deep and rough, and the brother and sister sensed that something was wrong. Peeking through a crack in the door, they saw not their mother's hand, but a furry animal's paw.
Startled, the brother and sister quietly slipped out the back door and climbed a tall tree beside the well in the yard. The tiger spotted their reflection in the well water and tried to climb up after them. In his panic, the brother accidentally shouted that the tiger could climb up by cutting notches with an axe, and the tiger began climbing exactly that way.
Desperate, the brother and sister prayed to the sky: "If you want us to live, send down a strong rope. If not, send a rotten one." A shining, strong rope came down from the sky, and the brother and sister climbed it safely up into the heavens. Seeing this, the tiger prayed the exact same prayer, but the rope that came down for it was old and rotten.
As the tiger climbed, the rope suddenly snapped, and it fell far away into a field of sorghum. Ever since, people have said that the reddish color at the base of sorghum stalks comes from a mark the tiger left behind that day. Up in the sky, the brother became the sun and the sister became the moon, and to this day they still shine brightly down on everyone.
