Walter Hartright, a young drawing master, was walking home to London late one summer night after visiting his mother’s cottage near Hampstead. The road was lonely and silent, and low clouds hid most of the moon.Lost in his own thoughts, he barely noticed how far he had walked when suddenly a hand touched his shoulder from behind.

He spun around and found himself face to face with a solitary woman, dressed from head to foot in white, though there was no house or carriage anywhere in sight.“Is that the road to London?” she asked, her voice trembling.Walter answered that it was, and asked, with growing unease, if he could help her.

“I have met with a misfortune,” she said, “and I know no one in this great city I can trust.”Something about her strange, urgent manner made Walter uneasy, yet her voice was gentle, and he could not simply leave her alone on a dark road at midnight. He offered to walk with her toward London and find her a cab, and she accepted gratefully, her hand shaking as she took his arm.

As they walked, she asked him, almost in a whisper, whether he knew any titled family in London — and grew visibly frightened at the name of one particular gentleman.Walter could make no sense of her fear, but he judged it kinder to ask no further questions. At last they reached a street where a cab stood waiting, and Walter helped the trembling woman climb inside.

She thanked him softly, and the cab rattled away into the London night, swallowed almost at once by the darkness.Walter stood alone in the empty street, oddly shaken, wondering who she could be and what misfortune had driven her out alone at such an hour.He had scarcely started walking again when a carriage came tearing up the road behind him and stopped sharply at his side.

Two anxious men leaned out and asked whether he had seen a woman passing by, dressed all in white. When Walter admitted that he had helped just such a woman find a cab, the men exchanged an alarmed glance and said she had escaped from a madhouse that very night.Walter walked on toward home in stunned silence, unable to shake the feeling that he had just helped a stranger escape into a fate he could not begin to guess.
