"Do you know the 'genius who has been stuffed and mounted'? I am in fine spirits." The story begins with this strange, lonely confession.
I live in a house at No. 33, in the sunless inner room of two rooms divided by a paper sliding door. The sunny outer room belongs to my wife. All day long I roll around under my quilt, or, when my wife is out, I play with her bottles of make-up. Burning tissue paper with a magnifying glass is the most fun game I know.
Every night, visitors come to see my wife, and meanwhile I have to stay quietly shut in my room. When they leave, my wife puts a silver coin by my pillow. I drop the coins into a piggy bank, but I don't know what money is for.
One night, for the first time, I went out of the house and wandered the streets. When I came back, I pressed the money in my pocket into my wife's hand, and that night, for the first time, I slept in her room. Around that time, my wife began giving me white pills for my cold, telling me they were aspirin. I took them and sank into a deep sleep, day and night.
Then, in my wife's room, I found a box of a sleeping drug called Adalin. The pills she had been giving me were not aspirin after all. I took the box and left the house, and thought for a long time about whether my wife had really meant to keep me asleep. When I came home, I saw something I should never have seen, and my wife flew into a rage at me.
I walked aimlessly until I found myself on the roof of the Mitsukoshi department store. Just then, the noon siren sounded. Suddenly my armpits itch. That is where wings once grew. "Wings, grow again. Let's fly. Let's fly. Just once more, let's fly."
