Epictetus was born a slave in the Roman Empire around the year 50, and he walked with a limp all his life. After he was freed, he taught philosophy, and one of his students wrote down his teachings in a short handbook, the Enchiridion.

“Some things are within our power, and some things are not.Within our power are our opinions, our aims, our desires and our dislikes: in a word, whatever is our own doing.Beyond our power are our body, our property, our reputation and our position: in a word, whatever is not our own doing. The things within our power are by nature free, and nobody can stop them; the things beyond our power are weak and dependent, and they belong to others. If you treat what belongs to others as your own, you will be frustrated, you will complain, and you will blame both gods and men.But if you take as your own only what really is your own, nobody will ever force you, nobody will hurt you, and you will have no enemy.

So whenever something unpleasant appears, ask first: is this within my power or not? And if it is not, be ready to say, ‘It is nothing to me.’If you fear sickness, death or poverty, you will be miserable, because you cannot always avoid them.

People are disturbed not by things, but by the opinions they have about things.Death, for example, is nothing terrible, or Socrates would have thought so too; the terrible thing is our opinion that death is terrible. So when we are upset, let us never blame others, but only ourselves, that is, our own opinions. An uneducated person blames others for his troubles; a person beginning to learn blames himself; and a fully educated person blames neither others nor himself.”
