John Law was a Scottish gambler and money expert who, in 1716, persuaded the ruler of France to let him open a bank that printed paper money. He then started the Mississippi Company, which promised great riches from French lands in America.

“At least three hundred thousand people applied for fifty thousand new shares, and Law’s house in the Rue de Quincampoix was crowded from morning to night.Dukes and countesses waited in the street for hours, and then rented rooms in the houses next door, just to stay near him.A cobbler earned two hundred livres a day by renting out his little stall to brokers. It was even said that a hunchbacked man earned good money by lending his hump as a writing desk to the eager buyers!

To keep prices rising, the bank printed more and more paper money, with nothing solid behind it.Once the alarm was sounded, nothing could make the people trust paper that could not be changed into gold or silver. One official told the ruler to his face that he would rather have a hundred thousand livres in gold than five million in the bank’s notes.”

The Mississippi bubble burst in 1720, the same year as the South Sea Bubble, and Law fled France almost penniless.Mackay still thought Law understood money better than any man of his day; his mistake was to forget that hope, like fear, can grow without limit.
