In 1847 Thoreau left Walden Pond, and in the book’s last chapter he looks back on what the experiment taught him.
“I left the woods for as good a reason as I went there: it seemed to me that I had several more lives to live, and could not spare any more time for that one.I learned this, at least, by my experiment: that if one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and tries to live the life which he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours. As he simplifies his life, the laws of the universe will seem less complex. If you have built castles in the air, your work need not be lost; that is where they should be. Now put the foundations under them.
Why should we be in such desperate haste to succeed? If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer.Let him step to the music which he hears, however slow or far away.It is not important that he should grow up as fast as an apple tree or an oak.
However poor your life is, meet it and live it; do not run from it or call it hard names.Love your life, poor as it is; you may perhaps have some pleasant, thrilling, glorious hours, even in a poorhouse.Only that day dawns to which we are awake.”
