René Descartes was a French philosopher and mathematician, often called the father of modern philosophy. In 1637 he published the Discourse on the Method, a short and personal book that he wrote in French rather than Latin so that ordinary readers could follow it.

“Good sense is the most fairly shared thing in the world, for everyone thinks they have so much of it that even those who are hardest to please never want more. This shows that the power of judging well and telling truth from error, which is called good sense or reason, is by nature equal in all people. So our opinions differ not because some of us have more reason than others, but because we lead our thoughts along different roads. It is not enough to have a good mind; the main thing is to use it well. Those who walk slowly but always keep to the straight road can go much further than those who run but leave it.

I was taught at one of the best schools in Europe, but when I finished, I found myself so full of doubts and errors that I seemed to have learned nothing except how ignorant I was.So as soon as I was old enough, I gave up the study of books and decided to look for no knowledge except what I could find in myself or in the great book of the world.I spent the rest of my youth travelling, visiting courts and armies, and meeting people of every kind.

I saw that many things which seemed strange and ridiculous to us were accepted by other great nations. So I learned not to believe too firmly in anything I had been taught only by example and custom. At last I decided to make myself the object of my study, and to use all the power of my mind to choose the path I should follow.”
