Seneca was a Roman Stoic philosopher, a famous writer and, for a time, the adviser of the young emperor Nero.Around the year 49, he wrote a long letter to his friend Paulinus, a busy official in charge of Rome’s grain supply, about how people waste their lives.
“Most people, Paulinus, complain that Nature is unkind, because we are born for such a short time, and our life runs away so fast that it ends just as we are getting ready to live. But we do not have a short time to live; we waste a great deal of it.Life is long enough to do great things, if we use all of it well.We are not given a short life, but we make it short; we are not poor in days, but wasteful of them.
One man is ruled by greed that nothing can satisfy, another works hard at useless things, another is always drunk, another is lazy. One is worn out by ambition and always seeking other people’s approval; another sails every sea in the hope of profit.Everyone spends their time on someone else; no one belongs to himself.
People will not let anyone take a piece of their land, and they fight over the smallest boundary, yet they let others walk right into their lives. No one wants to give away their money, but everyone gives away their life to many people. You live as if you would live for ever; you never remember how fragile you are.You fear everything like mortals, but you want everything as if you were immortal.”
