Machiavelli lived through years of sudden change, as foreign armies invaded Italy and powerful families rose and fell.Near the end of The Prince, he asks how much of our life is decided by luck, which he calls Fortune.

“Many people believe that the world is ruled by fortune and by God, so that human wisdom cannot change anything, and it is useless to work hard.Sometimes, when I think about the great changes of our times, I almost agree with them. But so that our free will is not lost, I believe that fortune decides half of our actions, and leaves the other half, or a little less, to us.

I compare fortune to one of those violent rivers that, when it floods, covers the plains, tears down trees and buildings, and carries the earth from one place to another.Everyone runs from it, and no one can stop it.Yet when the weather is calm, people can build walls and channels, so that when the water rises again, it flows away safely, and its force is less wild and dangerous. It is the same with fortune: she shows her power where no strength has been prepared to resist her.

A prince may be happy today and ruined tomorrow without any change in his character. This happens because he who acts in step with the times succeeds, and he who does not, fails.A cautious man succeeds while the times call for caution, but when the times change, he is ruined if he does not change his way of acting.Yet people rarely change, because they cannot go against their nature, and because, having always done well one way, they cannot believe it is time to try another. For my part, I think it is better to be bold than cautious, because fortune favours those who act with daring.”
