Niccolò Machiavelli was a diplomat in Florence until a change of government cost him his job, and he was even imprisoned and tortured.Living quietly on his farm, he wrote The Prince, a short guide for rulers that describes politics as it really is, not as it should be.

“Many writers have imagined perfect states that have never existed, but I want to write something useful, so I will follow the real truth of things. How people actually live is so far from how they ought to live that a ruler who does only what ought to be done will soon be ruined.A man who wants to be good in every way will be destroyed among so many who are not good.So a prince who wants to keep his power must learn how not to be good, and use this or not as necessity demands.

Here a question arises: is it better to be loved than feared, or feared than loved? One should wish to be both, but since it is difficult to be both, it is much safer to be feared than loved, if you must give up one.For people in general are ungrateful, changeable, false and greedy; while you do them good, they are entirely yours, but when danger comes near, they turn against you.Love is held by a chain of obligation, which people break whenever it suits them; but fear is held by a dread of punishment that never fails.

Still, a prince should make himself feared in such a way that, if he does not win love, he avoids hatred. He can easily be feared without being hated, as long as he keeps his hands off the property of his people. For people forget the death of their father more quickly than the loss of their inheritance.”
