Zarathustra was climbing a lonely mountain path, and on his shoulders sat a dwarf, the spirit of heaviness, who kept whispering that everything that rises must fall. But Zarathustra answered with courage: “Courage is the best killer, courage that attacks: it kills even death itself, for it says: ‘Was that life? Well then! Once more!’”The dwarf jumped down from his shoulder and sat on a stone. Just where they had stopped, there stood a gateway.

“Look at this gateway, dwarf!” said Zarathustra. “It has two faces. Two roads meet here, and no one has ever walked to the end of either. This long lane backwards goes on for an eternity, and that long lane forwards is another eternity. Here, at this gateway, they come together. The name of the gateway is written above it: ‘This Moment.’”“Everything straight is a lie,” murmured the dwarf with contempt. “All truth is crooked; time itself is a circle.”

“Behind us lies an eternity,” Zarathustra went on. “Must not everything that can happen have already happened, and passed by, along that lane? And if everything has already existed, what do you think of this moment, dwarf? Must not this gateway, too, have existed before? And this slow spider creeping in the moonlight, and the moonlight itself, and you and I in this gateway, whispering together of eternal things: must we not all have been here before? And must we not return, and run down that other long lane in front of us? Must we not return eternally?”

Later, when Zarathustra lay ill in his cave, his animals, the eagle and the serpent, sang the same thought back to him:“Everything goes, everything returns; the wheel of existence rolls on for ever. Everything dies, everything blooms again; the year of existence runs on for ever.Everything breaks, everything is joined together again; the same house of existence builds itself for ever. Every moment, existence begins. The centre is everywhere. Crooked is the path of eternity.”
