Later in the book, Livingston meets an old trader in Palm Beach who has seen many booms and panics since the Civil War.The old man tells him about a friend who had a good system, made fifteen thousand dollars in four days, and then stopped following it.A month later the friend had to borrow ten dollars to buy a baby carriage.
“The speculator’s chief enemies are always inside himself; it is human nature to hope and to fear. When the market goes against you, you hope that every day will be the last bad day, and you lose more than you should. And when the market goes your way, you become afraid that the next day will take away your profit, and you get out too soon.
The successful trader has to fight these two deep instincts and reverse them.Instead of hoping he must fear; instead of fearing he must hope.He must fear that a small loss may become a much bigger loss, and hope that his profit may become a big profit. After nearly thirty years of trading, I believe a man may beat a single stock at a certain time, but no man living can beat the stock market!”
Coming from one of the boldest traders who ever lived, that last line is worth remembering.
