이듬해 봄, 난리가 가라앉자 소유는 다시 과거를 보러 길을 떠났어요.낙양에 이르렀을 때, 천진교 근처 누각에서 젊은 선비들이 기생들과 함께 잔치를 벌이고 있었어요.선비들은 시를 지어 솜씨를 겨루고 있었는데, 낙양 제일의 기생 계섬월이 가장 뛰어난 시를 골라 노래로 부르기로 했어요.

소유가 누각에 오르자, 선비들은 허름한 차림의 젊은이를 보고 속으로 비웃었어요.하지만 소유는 붓을 들어 단숨에 시 세 편을 지어 섬월에게 건넸어요.시를 읽은 섬월의 눈이 반짝였고, 섬월은 곧 맑은 목소리로 소유의 시를 노래하기 시작했어요.

선비들은 얼굴이 굳어졌지만, 이미 약속한 일이라 아무도 불평할 수 없었어요.잔치가 끝나자 섬월은 소유에게 자기 집으로 찾아와 달라고 조용히 청했어요.

그날 밤 섬월은 등불 아래에서 소유에게 자신의 마음을 털어놓았어요.“저는 오래전부터 평생을 맡길 만한 분을 기다려 왔는데, 오늘 드디어 그런 분을 만났어요.”소유도 섬월의 재주와 진심에 감동하여, 과거에 급제하면 꼭 섬월을 데리러 오겠다고 약속했어요.

섬월은 기뻐하며, 도읍에 가면 꼭 만나 보아야 할 사람이 있다고 말했어요.“정사도 댁의 따님 정경패 아가씨는 얼굴과 재주, 덕을 모두 갖춘 천하제일의 규수랍니다.”“그리고 하북에는 제 친구 적경홍이 있는데, 경홍도 저 못지않게 재주가 뛰어나요.”

소유는 섬월의 말을 가슴에 새기고, 다음 날 아침 아쉬운 작별을 했어요.소유는 도읍 장안을 향해 나귀를 몰면서, 아직 만나 보지 못한 정경패 아가씨를 떠올렸어요.그러나 소유는 전생에 돌다리에서 만났던 여덟 선녀가 하나씩 자기 앞에 나타나고 있다는 것을 전혀 알지 못했어요.

The next spring, once the fighting had died down, Soyu set out again to sit the state examination. When he reached Luoyang, young scholars were holding a feast with singing girls in a pavilion near the Tianjin Bridge. The scholars were competing at writing poems, and Gye Seomwol, the finest singer in Luoyang, was to choose the best one and sing it.

When Soyu climbed up to the pavilion, the scholars saw a shabbily dressed youth and laughed at him to themselves. But Soyu took up a brush, wrote three poems in one go, and handed them to Seomwol. Seomwol's eyes lit up as she read them, and soon she began to sing Soyu's poems in a clear voice.

The scholars' faces stiffened, but they had agreed to the rules, so no one could complain. When the feast was over, Seomwol quietly asked Soyu to come and visit her at her house.

That night, by the light of a lamp, Seomwol opened her heart to Soyu. "For a long time I have been waiting for someone I could trust with my whole life, and today I have finally met him." Soyu was moved by her talent and sincerity, and promised that once he passed the examination, he would come back for her.

Seomwol was delighted, and told him there was someone he simply had to meet when he reached the capital. "Lady Jeong Gyeongpae, the daughter of Minister Jeong, has beauty, talent and virtue all together. They say there is no finer young lady in the land." "And in Hebei there is my friend Jeok Gyeonghong, who is every bit as gifted as I am."

Soyu took her words to heart, and the next morning they parted with regret. As he drove his donkey toward the capital, Chang'an, Soyu thought about Lady Jeong Gyeongpae, whom he had never met. But Soyu had no idea that the eight fairies he had met on the stone bridge in his former life were appearing before him, one by one.
