Halfway to Long Island the road passed through the valley of ashes, a grey, dusty place where a man named George Wilson kept a small garage.Wilson’s wife, Myrtle, was Tom’s secret lover, and earlier that day she had seen Tom go by in the big yellow car. Now, as we came near, we saw a crowd outside the garage, and Tom stopped the car.

Myrtle had been killed a short time before: she had run out into the road toward a big yellow car, and it had struck her and not stopped.Tom’s face turned white, for he understood that the yellow car was Gatsby’s, and that it had been coming back from New York.“That yellow car I was driving wasn’t mine,” he told Wilson quickly, and when we drove on, he cried all the way home.

At the Buchanans’ house I did not want to go in, and as I waited for a taxi, Gatsby stepped out of the bushes by the drive.“Was she killed?” he asked, and I understood from his face that he already knew.“Was Daisy driving?” I asked, and after a moment he said, “Yes — but of course I’ll say I was.”

The woman had rushed out as if she wanted to speak to someone in the car, and Daisy had been too frightened to turn away in time.Gatsby had taken the wheel afterwards and driven her home, and now he meant to wait outside all night in case Tom was unkind to her.I walked quietly to the house and looked through a window, and saw Daisy and Tom sitting at the kitchen table, talking together over a plate of cold chicken.

There was an unmistakable air of natural closeness about them, and anybody would have said that they were planning something together. When I came back and told Gatsby that everything was quiet, he would not leave. So I walked away and left him standing there in the moonlight — watching over nothing.
