Jim Hawkins’s father kept a small inn by the sea, called the Admiral Benbow. One day, a rough old sailor arrived, carrying a heavy sea chest and singing a wild song about rum.He asked to stay at the inn, calling himself only “the captain,” and paid with a handful of gold coins.
All day he watched the sea through a brass telescope, and every evening he sat drinking rum by the fire.He told Jim to watch for a “seafaring man with one leg” and promised him a silver coin each month if he gave warning the moment such a man appeared. The captain’s wild stories of pirates and storms frightened the local people, yet they kept coming back for the thrill of it.
Week after week the captain stayed on without paying any more money, and Jim’s father was too afraid of him to ask.As Jim’s father grew seriously ill, Dr. Livesey came one evening to examine him and stayed after dinner to smoke his pipe. While the doctor sat talking quietly with the other guests, the captain suddenly began to sing his old song about “the dead man’s chest.”
The captain slapped his hand on the table for silence, but Dr. Livesey kept talking calmly, as if nothing had happened.Furious, the captain roared, “Silence, there, between decks!” and the doctor coolly asked if he was being addressed. When the captain answered with a curse, the doctor warned him that the world would be a cleaner place without such a scoundrel in it.
The captain leapt to his feet, drew a sailor’s knife, and threatened to pin the doctor to the wall. The doctor did not move an inch, and told him steadily that if he did not put the knife away at once, he would hang for it at the next assizes. The two men stared at each other in silence until the captain finally backed down, put away his knife, and sat back in his chair, grumbling like a beaten dog.
Dr. Livesey then warned the captain that, as the local magistrate, he would now have an eye on him day and night. If he ever heard even a single complaint against him, the doctor said, he would see the captain hunted down and driven out of the district for good.Soon after, the doctor rode away, and the captain stayed unusually quiet for many evenings to come — though Jim could not yet know that this was only the beginning of the strange events the captain would bring to their door.
