“Cursed creator! Why did I live?” That night I wandered through the woods, howling like a wild animal. No one among all the people in the world would pity or help me, and I declared war on the whole human race — and most of all on you, who had made me.But the next day, in the calm sunshine, I thought that I had been too hasty; I should have let the old man get to know me slowly.
So I crept back to my shed and waited for the family to wake up, but no one came out of the cottage.Later Felix came with another man and told him, “We can never live in your cottage again. My father’s life is in danger, and my wife and my sister will never forget their horror.”They left, and I never saw any of the De Lacey family again.
My friends had broken the only link that held me to the world, and for the first time I was filled with hatred and a desire for revenge. That night, when the moon had set, I set fire to the empty cottage and watched the flames swallow it.Then I remembered from your journal that you came from Geneva, and I decided to go there and find you, my father and my creator.
I travelled only at night, through rain and snow, guided by the sun and the stars, and the closer I came, the more my anger grew. One spring morning I saw a young girl slip and fall into a fast river, so I jumped in and pulled her out.But a man ran up, took her from my arms and shot me with his gun — this was my reward for saving a human life!
When my wound healed, I went on, and at last I reached the fields outside Geneva. There a beautiful little boy ran into my hiding place, and I thought that a child so young might not yet fear ugliness; perhaps he could become my friend. But the boy screamed, “Monster! Let me go! My papa is Monsieur Frankenstein — he will punish you!”
Frankenstein — your family! In my rage I silenced him, and in a moment your little brother William lay dead at my feet.I took the small portrait he wore and hid it in the dress of a young woman asleep in a barn, so that she would be blamed for my crime. So now I ask this of you: I am alone and miserable, and no human will live with me, but one as ugly as myself would not turn away — you must create a companion for me.
